Football season is BACK! For many fans, that used to include imbibing an incredible amount of beer along with the game. For Thrilling Thursday this week, let’s shift our focus from the alcohol to watching football sober.
The Part Nobody Talks About
The Game Day culture is defined by alcohol at its default. Tailgating, drink specials at the bar, and alcohol commercials can make your first season as a sober person feel like learning a whole new ritual. If drinking was ever a part of how you watched the game, you have your work cut out for you.
But here’s the real thrill. Fourth quarter final two minutes rush, the group explosion of a bad call, or the epic joy of Jordan Love finding a receiver in the end zone doesn’t come from a drink. It comes from the fun of the game itself, and watching football sober with others who believe in the fun too.
What Actually Makes Game Day Exciting
Take out the drinks, and what’s left is the good stuff:
- A close game with real stakes
- Those loud, shared reactions with friends
- The snacks! Oh the snacks. Little hot dogs, cheese and crackers…
- The Bears still suck, and other inside jokes
- The absolute pure thrill (or gut punch) of a last-second win (or loss)
Alcohol? What alcohol? You don’t need it, and you’ll find with watching football sober you really never actually did.
Watching Packers Football Sober This Week
We have a Watch Party event this week in Baraboo! Our Project WisHope Community Center is hosting the Packers vs. Vikings this Sunday, September 13th, at 12:00pm. Food and bevs provided, and prizes with every touchdown. Wear your favorite green and gold. There’s also a Grieve, Breathe, and Grow meeting at 7pm for those who want to stay. Questions? Reach out to Tiffany at tiffany@wishope.org, or 608.963.7521.

Whether or not this is your first sober Packer Season, it’s a full sober game day experience with others who get it.
Why This Belongs in Recovery
Build a new tradition. Watching football sober isn’t some small version of the old game experience. It’s the clearer one. You get to watch and remember the whole game. It’s the new version of something you already love that you don’t have to give up just because you stopped drinking.
This Week’s Challenge
Come to the party in Baraboo Sunday. Wear the Green and Gold, bring your appetite, and dive into the game, letting it be as loud and thrilling as it always was.
But if you can’t make it, follow our events calendar for other happenings this month. We’re hosting Packer watch parties every Sunday. Check the Packers schedule for all the games.
