Thrilling Thursday. Sometimes a book you can’t put down gives you the fastest heart rate all day because thrills don’t always come from speed or great heights. For this week: head to the library for your next adrenaline rush.
Why Milwaukee Central Library
For a place that’s worth a trip on its own, visit the Milwaukee Public Library’s Central Branch. Epic reading rooms where ceilings soar, a terrace on the rooftop, and a browsing collection big enough to lose your day in all make the building itself a destination. Need more? It’s free, open to all, and no pressure to buy or stick around for a set amount of time.
Don’t have a library card? Now’s the perfect time to get one. Also free! It only takes a few minutes, and then your world is opened up to the whole catalog, including audio and ebooks, if you like that kind of thing.
Find Your Thrills in the Stacks
If you like rollercoasters, a truly gripping thriller can give you the same focus, pumping heart rate, a story you can’t tear away from. A few pointers to find one:
- Ask a librarian for a recommendation. They read constantly and love a challenge
- Browse the “Staff Picks” shelf, which can sometimes be found near the entrance
- For something everyone’s talking about, check the best seller list
- A true crime or psychological thriller can give you something a little darker

Why This Belongs in Recovery
A great book can grab your full attention much the way sports do. And library books save you some money, with a bit less risk involved. It’s a legitimate way to have an outlet full of escape and intense thrills, with fewer of the old adrenaline triggers attached.
And you can take it with you. Books are a great transportable coping mechanism. They can get you through long waits, a hard night or two, and supply a quiet weekend.
This Week’s Thrills Challenge
Get thee to a library this week. Ask the librarian if they can recommend a thriller, or just browse and grab something that catches your eye. Let go. Get absorbed. You don’t need to plan the trip and there’s no schedule to keep. Just you. A chair or your bed. And a story worth a later night.
Check the Milwaukee Public Library’s catalog online before you go if you want to reserve a title ahead of time. And if quiet, solo time like this is new territory for you, our post on Solitude Sunday digs into why that kind of alone time matters in recovery.
